Life is Short

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.
– Psalms 39:4-5
If it’s one lesson that we have learned in this pandemic, it is the frailty of life. We are not as invincible as we thought. Every day we read about folks from all walks of life who have contracted the virus. Up until diagnosis they might have been healthier than you and I. Makes us realize it could happen to us.
In the beginning of this Psalm, it sounds like David was angry and or sorrowful about something. He was trying to keep his mouth shut. I remember my mom telling me that if I didn’t have anything good to say I should be quiet.
When he opens his mouth, David asks God to “make me know my end, and what is the measure of my days.”
To realize how short life is and the vanity of just staying busy. “Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them.” (v. 6)
So, is life hopeless because it’s so frail so short? Nope. David reminds us where our hope is. “And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.” (v.7)
May we rest in the assurance that our hope is in God, draw near to Him and abide in His presence.
