Camp Cocoon – at Tallulah Falls, Georgia Camp Chatooga – Athens Y Camp Facility.
Camp Cocoon is a weekend camp for children and adolescents, ages 6-17, who have experienced the death of a loved one. Campers have the opportunity to meet peers who are going through similar loss situations. While having fun in a safe and caring environment, campers begin to feel comfortable sharing their stories and learning from their peers who understand what it’s like to experience bereavement.
The activities were engaging for the campers and the food was really good. This was an excellent camp for campers and volunteers alike. As we ended camp with the butterfly release we could all sense that something good had happened over the weekend. The children were bonded together with each other and the volunteers. The volunteers did not want camp to end and love was in the air. As the campers departed there were a lot of hugs passed around and that made everything just right.
Each day of our lives reminds us that change is continuous and unavoidable. Camp Cocoon helps give young people the tools emotionally and spiritually to deal with devastating changes and helps participants to develop from: a feeling of loss to a celebration of life, from confusion to understanding, from tears of trauma to tears of joy from happy memories, and from cocoons to butterflies!
The camp is fully staffed by experienced volunteer professionals consisting of doctors, chaplains, nurses, administrators, hospice providers and trained caregivers. Cabin groups are small and composed of same-sex campers in similar age brackets. Campers enjoy arts and crafts, water activities, team sports, musical instruments and even a ceremonial butterfly release! If you have a child, or know of a child who has experienced a significant loss in his/her life, please complete the camper registration form asap as space is limited. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
